- Liner Notes on CD:
A few years ago while riding solo across the U.S. on my bike, I called Gil from the high plains of Montana or Wyoming or some lonely damn place out there. The weather had turned gloomy, and I was far from home, in a mood that felt like the weather. I requested he leave a song on voicemail that I could listen to when another cell signal came along. A day later some bars showed up on my phone’s display, along with the voicemail icon. When I heard Gil’s a cappella version of a verse and chorus of Neil Young’s “See The Sky About To Rain” through the phone’s little speaker, chills ran down my spine. Though there were still many miles to ride, I suddenly felt a lot closer to home.
Knowing and playing with Gilliam all these years, I’ve frequently gone to his music for its pleasant comfort of familiarity. There’ve always been cover tunes to depend on from Gil, with his unique styles of flatpicking and fingerpicking, to flavor an obscure or classic number along with his vocal warmth, while still delivering the original artist’s message.
Here he’s pulled together a great collection of his own compositions for us to sit back with and consider. What you’ll find is a couple of decades of his life – the dreams and experiences, past and future events, friends and family. Low-key and straightforward.
A lot like all of us.
A lot like home.
